FuriosaAI has established a new European flagship office in Portugal. The new office will serve as the regional hub to coordinate commercial and technical support operations across Europe, aligned with FuriosaAI’s global operating model, as well as research and development (R&D) in compilers and chip and PCB design.

"Portugal has a world-renowned community in compilers, a consolidated ecosystem in chip design, data centers powered by clean energy, and a growing group of AI startups and solution integrators. It was the obvious location for FuriosaAI's flagship office in Europe. We are very proud to bring to Portugal a company that operates in such a critical area; worldwide, there are only half a dozen companies capable of developing this kind of technology."

— Nuno Lopes, Director, FuriosaAI Europe

FuriosaAI, a South Korean company building high-performance data center chips for artificial intelligence applications, announced today the opening of its flagship office  in Lisbon. Following the company’s mass production of its RNGD AI accelerator earlier this year and expansion of its global customer base to include LG AI Research, Anexia, and Samsung SDS, the facility marks a decisive step in the company's international expansion and positions Portugal as the strategic center of Furiosa's operations in Europe.

About FuriosaAI

Founded in 2017 in South Korea, Furiosa develops energy-efficient chips for artificial intelligence inference applications, positioning itself as an alternative to GPUs. The company has established itself as a strategic partner for organizations seeking high-performance AI hardware while reducing costs of their AI applications and their dependence on legacy silicon vendors.

Furiosa markets servers and accelerator boards designed for conventional data centers. Unlike GPUs that require high-power cooling infrastructure and power supplies, RNGD operates within the limits of air-cooled data centers, eliminating the need for costly retrofitting. This makes Furiosa products particularly attractive to organizations with existing data centers that want to adopt AI solutions without additional infrastructure investments.

Strategic partnerships with Samsung and LG

Furiosa's growth trajectory was recently bolstered by two key partnerships with Korean tech giants. Samsung SDS announced the launch of a new AI computing cloud service powered by the RNGD chip and, in parallel, LG U+ presented an integrated "ready-to-use" AI solution that combines the RNGD chip with LG's EXAONE 4.0 language model and ixi-Enterprise platform, in a single server designed for on-premise operation without the need for an internet connection. These partnerships reinforce Furiosa's recognition as a leading provider for sovereign and large-scale AI deployments.

Lisbon as a European capital

The choice of Lisbon resulted from a careful analysis of several European cities. Portugal stood out for the quality and size of its ecosystem in the field of chip design – the core of Furiosa's activity – and for the availability of compiler specialists, a critical skill for optimizing artificial intelligence applications. Added to these factors are the presence of internationally recognized academic and research institutions, a market for high-quality technical talent, and conditions favorable to foreign investment.

Mission and responsibilities of the Lisbon office

As the flagship office in Europe, the Lisbon office will assume a cross-functional role within the global organization. Its responsibilities encompass three main areas: commercial operations across Europe, technical support for customers and partners across the continent, and research and development (R&D) in the areas of compilers and chip and PCB design. This combination of commercial and technical functions gives the Lisbon office a unique role within the global organization.

Leadership

The office will be led by Nuno Lopes, who combines the role of Director of FuriosaAI Europe with that of professor and researcher at the University of Lisbon (IST-UL). Nuno Lopes is a world-renowned expert in the field of compilers, with almost a decade of experience at Apple and Microsoft Research before taking the helm of FuriosaAI's European headquarters, and a history of significant scientific contributions. His dual connection to academia and industry reinforces the European headquarters' vocation as a bridge between cutting-edge research and industrial application.

Supporting European technological sovereignty

The opening of its European office in Lisbon is part of Furiosa's strategy to position itself as a leading partner for European companies, public institutions, and research projects seeking sovereign alternatives in the field of artificial intelligence. At a time when Europe is investing heavily in building AI infrastructure—notably through programs like InvestAI and AI Gigafactories—FuriosaAI's presence in Lisbon provides essential geographical, cultural, and regulatory proximity to meet the specific needs of the European market.

Furiosa is committed to investing heavily in R&D in the region and contributing to the Portuguese and European technological and business ecosystem through the development of local talent, partnerships with universities and research centers, and close collaboration with startups and AI solution integrators.
